Handicap Racing

The Port Ludlow Yacht Club has sponsored a Handicap Racing program for members and the local sailing community since the late 1970s.

The purpose of the program is to provide a means for sailors with a wide variety of craft to compete fairly in organized races governed by the PLYC Handicap Racing Program Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions.

PLYC sailors come to our races with varied backgrounds and experience. Our goals are to enable skippers and crew to apply their sailing skills in a competitive environment, to advance their knowledge of sailing technique, to learn more about the capability and limitations of their craft, and promote the safe enjoyment of sailing in an exciting venue. Above all, we intend to have fun!

Because of the variety of boats entered in our races, PLYC uses a handicapping system to even competition. Handicap races are generally held on Saturdays. Consult the seasonal schedule for race dates.

All sailboats 18 feet or longer (and if a centerboard monohull, with ballast for self-righting) are eligible to compete in our races. PLYC members may register for a racing season by completing the registration form, and obtaining a provisional rating. Please consult our sailing instructions for detailed information regarding policy, procedures and safety requirements. Here is a current schedule of the PLYC fleet handicaps.
